Regarding the dry land, it is apparent that it hasn't been formed in this verse, not until Gen 1:9 do we see the dry land appear, this fact helps prove my point made in Gen 1:1, that the mention of the Land and Heavens in the first verse is more of a topic sentence to the creation process. In other words, Gen 1:1 is an introduction of what God is about to talk about. Speaking from a more literal point of view, water on the Earth in liquid from is likely only due to the thermal energy from the Earth herself, because there is no other source of heat. It says, ignorance (darkness) was on the face of the abyss, I wonder what is meant by abyss? Could the abyss be the same as the Waters, excluding the Land, or does it include the Land too? The mention of waters and the work God does on these waters, seems to be related to the abyss, but not exactly the same thing, perhaps the abyss referrers to the entire mess of things. We see the spirit of Eloheem vibrating, brooding, fluttering, or relaxing over the waters. If we use the word relaxing, then it might help explain why the abyss is in darkness, or ignorance, likewise, if it is only fluttering, moving, or shaking, then I am not sure what the waters could learn from such an action. If it is brooding, then the spirit would seem more like a mother, or father figure to the waters, than some sort of impersonal active force. It seems as if the spirit may not know, or may not be ready to do anything until further instructed, as we shall see in the next verse.
