The Golden Rule
Matthew 7:12
Mankind was made in the image of God, by God the Father and his Son. Those who keep asking our Father for anything they truly need He gives it, those who keep seeking for our Father He shows them the Way to himself, and those who keep knocking on the Front Door, which is Father's Word, He opens to them. If we are all made in our Father's image and he does take care of us in this way, how much more so should we, as his dependent children love all our neighbors. Now to do unto others as we would want them to do unto us is easy if we already love them. Really of what reward is it to us if the only ones we love are our own? What have we learned if what we are already doing is easy? It is much more difficult to love a smelly and poor stranger, or someone who is strange looking and lonely, or someone who is old and feeble, or someone who is of another race then our own, or someone who slaps us around, or someone who appears lazy, or someone who considers us his enemy, or someone we might consider our enemy, than our own brothers and sisters. If we can do these things we are doing something of worth toward our Father, and we are allowing our light to shine on those around us. Who really is our neighbor then?
But the teacher of the Law wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "Who is my neighbor?" 30 Jesus answered, "There was once a man who was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when robbers attacked him, stripped him, and beat him up, leaving him half dead. 31 It so happened that a priest was going down that road; but when he saw the man, he walked on by on the other side. 32 In the same way a Levite also came there, went over and looked at the man, and then walked on by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan who was traveling that way came upon the man, and when he saw him, his heart was filled with pity. 34 He went over to him, poured oil and wine on his wounds and bandaged them; then he put the man on his own animal and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Take care of him,' he told the innkeeper, 'and when I come back this way, I will pay you whatever else you spend on him.' " 36 And Jesus concluded, "In your opinion, which one of these three acted like a neighbor toward the man attacked by the robbers?" 37 The teacher of the Law answered, "The one who was kind to him." Jesus replied, "You go, then, and do the same."Luke 10:29-37 GNB
This parable implies that our neighbor is anyone we happen to come across. Suppose he's a murderer, and he kills us?
"I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot afterward do anything worse. 5 I will show you whom to fear: fear God, who, after killing, has the authority to throw into hell. Believe me, he is the one you must fear! 6 "Aren't five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one sparrow is forgotten by God. 7 Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth much more than many sparrows!Luke 12:4-7 GNB
Proverbs 22:13 GNB
Lazy people stay at home; they say a lion might get them if they go outside. To fear being killed by men is to have no faith in the power of God, but as Christians we have died to our flesh and we know that God raised Jesus Christ to life.
