Where Your Treasure Is,
There Your Heart Will Be
Matthew 6:19
If we own any property on the earth, it is highly likely that to lose any of it, or even the possibility it could be lost, would cause its owner some anxiety. If one had a wife and someone else seduced or committed adultery with her, the husband might be inclined to kill the person who did such a thing, or might get even with him and his wife, in some evil way. The less we have on the earth, the less there is to worry that someone else will take it. Said another way, the less love toward the things we own on the earth, the better off we shall be. Thus the reason marriage is not advisable, nor is making too much money advisable. Now with what extra material goods we do have, if we use that surplus to help someone in need, then we have helped someone in the image of God, and God will add to our bank account in Heaven.
When you give to the poor, it is like lending to YHWH, and YHWH will pay you back.Proverbs 19:17 GNB
Luke 18:18-30 GNB
A Jewish leader asked Jesus, "Good Teacher, what must I do to receive eternal life?" 19 "Why do you call me good?" Jesus asked him. "No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery; do not commit murder; do not steal; do not accuse anyone falsely; respect your father and your mother.' " 21 The man replied, "Ever since I was young, I have obeyed all these commandments." 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "There is still one more thing you need to do. Sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; then come and follow me." 23 But when the man heard this, he became very sad, because he was very rich. 24 Jesus saw that he was sad and said, "How hard it is for rich people to enter the Kingdom of God! 25 It is much harder for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle." 26 The people who heard him asked, "Who, then, can be saved?" 27 Jesus answered, "What is humanly impossible is possible for God." 28 Then Peter said, "Look! We have left our homes to follow you." 29 "Yes," Jesus said to them, "and I assure you that anyone who leaves home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the Kingdom of God 30 will receive much more in this present age and eternal life in the age to come."This from of discreet charity is one form that acquires us treasure in the heavens, so that when we get there we will have something with which to pay off the ransom for our souls in the judgment.
(Proverbs 13:8
NWT)
The ransom for a man’s soul is his riches, but the one of little means has not
heard rebuke.
Now this seems to contradict the idea that if we are not to acquire any treasure on the earth then how shall we give to those in need. And if we only have acquired a small amount, then how are we to make much in heaven? First of all, we should realize that the desire for treasure on earth is to have an emotional attachment to it, and if we love it so much, that to lose it would cause us emotional pain, then this implies nothing more than idolatry toward whatever material thing we desire. If we remove our emotional attachment to material things, then we cannot get distressed if it has to go away. However we are warned against acquiring too much. If we do we will be setting ourselves up for failure.
But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and are caught in the trap of many foolish and harmful desires, which pull them down to ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a source of all kinds of evil. Some have been so eager to have it that they have wandered away from the faith and have broken their hearts with many sorrows.1 Timothy 6:9-10 GNB
Proverbs 23:4-5 GNB
Be wise enough not to wear yourself out trying to get rich. 5 Your money can be gone in a flash, as if it had grown wings and flown away like an eagle. Moreover even if we have very little to give, what we do give will be counted toward us relative to what we are capable of. So for example a person who was able to earn 100 billion dollars, and gives to the poor people 10 billion, has acquired the same as someone who was only able to earn 100 dollars and gives away 10 dollars to the poor.
As Jesus sat near the Temple treasury, he watched the people as they dropped in their money. Many rich men dropped in a lot of money; 42 then a poor widow came along and dropped in two little copper coins, worth about a penny. 43 He called his disciples together and said to them, "I tell you that this poor widow put more in the offering box than all the others. 44 For the others put in what they had to spare of their riches; but she, poor as she is, put in all she had---she gave all she had to live on."Mark 12:41-44 GNB
Now someone might argue that we own our own flesh, shall we give it away too? Jesus did.
Matthew 16:24 KJV
Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
