Tell The Truth
Matthew 5:33

In the Law of Moses, it was possible to make an oath by something one had great confidence in. In fact YHWH commanded the following:

Deuteronomy 6:13 Webster 13 Thou shalt fear YHWH thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.

Now however it is up to each Christian to simply be honest and do what we say and say what we mean. For example if someone says that they will be someplace at such and such a time, they had better be there at that time, or it becomes a lie. Notice what the second hated thing is to God after an arrogant eye.

Proverbs 6:16-19 Webster 16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yes, seven are an abomination to him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood. 18 A heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to mischief, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and him that soweth discord among brethren.

Because we can't tell what future God has in store for us, it is wise to always think about what we say and to give ourselves some leeway, and then say "If God is willing".

James 4:13-17 Webster Come now, ye that say, To-day or to-morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy, and sell, and get gain: 14 Whereas ye know not what will be on the morrow: For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 Instead of that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. 16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. 17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Proverbs 20:25 Webster It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make inquiry.

Proverbs 10:19 GNB The more you talk, the more likely you are to sin. If you are wise, you will keep quiet.
