The Salt Of The Earth
Matthew 5:13

Why would Messiah call his disciples salt? Salt was then and still is used for preserving and flavoring food. If the Word of God is unleavened bread, then the salt is what keeps it pure and gives it flavor. It is our job then to make God's word palatable. We must do this in both word and action. Said another way, we need to present the word without any hypocrisy. We might be misguided in not wanting to do this, because we value more, what other men think of us rather then what our Father in the heavens (whom we cannot see with our eyes) thinks of us. Or we might think that the pure Word would turn others away from wanting to listen to it, so we might try to water down its message or change things around to make them seem more palatable. That would be adding leaven to something we are supposed to preserve. Finally, what is more annoying than being preached to by hypocrites? What kind of message are we sending to our listeners then? Nothing good I assure you. These all show a lack of faith in our Father, and therefore a lack of love.  Another possible meaning for salt that does not lose its savor, is not giving in to sufferings, persecutions, or difficulties in life, but gaining endurance through those situations.  If we lose our savor we become worthless to God, and he allows worldly men to trample on us outside of his protection. Someone being trampled on by men might think and teach their own that they are being persecuted for righteousness sake, but in reality they are being trampled on underfoot by men, because they have lost their savor.

Colossians 4:6 GNB Your speech should always be pleasant and interesting, and you should know how to give the right answer to everyone.

Leviticus 2:13 GNB Put salt on every grain offering, because salt represents the covenant between you and God. (You must put salt on all your offerings.)

Luke 9:61-62 GNB Someone else said, "I will follow you, sir; but first let me go and say good-bye to my family." 62 Jesus said to him, "Anyone who starts to plow and then keeps looking back is of no use for the Kingdom of God."

Hebrews 10:36-39 RSV For you have need of endurance, so that you may do the will of God and receive what is promised. 37 "For yet a little while, and the coming one shall come and shall not tarry; 38 but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him." 39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and keep their souls.

Romans 5:3-5 RSVA More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.

Let us then be the salt of the earth, and never lose our savor.
